What is Cork Flooring?

Cork flooring comes from the outer bark of the cork oak tree. Since it can be stripped and removed several times with little harm to the tree, it is a steady source of renewable raw material. Along with being 100% biodegradable, cork flooring is elastic, durable, warm and soft underfoot. It is also impermeable to moisture and has natural rot-resistant and fire-resistant properties.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is important to us at Barry Carpet to highlight the philanthropic partnership Mohawk and Karastan have established with the Susan G. Komen foundation. We happily carry the carpet and hard surface products that these brands manufacture. We are especially proud to partner with Susan G. Komen by providing Mohawk’s SmartCushion pad here at Barry Carpet. Since 2001, Mohawk has donated more than $5.6 million dollars to the Susan G. Komen foundation, which is the largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research outside the federal government, (raising $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982).

A portion of every Mohawk SmartCushion Pad sold is donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Their exclusively engineered SmartCushion enhances the feel and performance of your carpet with its visco-elastic memory foam material. SmartCushion also improves insulation for an energy-efficient room. By absorbing and deflecting foot traffic noise, SmartCushion provides a quieter room. Not only is the purchase of this comfy cushion helping to save lives, it also has an incredible warranty. When the original purchaser buys any new Mohawk carpet with the pad, Mohawk will enhance the warranties for the new carpet by adding 20 YEARS to the current warranty! Mohawk also transfers the warranty to the new owner if the house is sold. Additionally, areas that are not normally covered by other flooring brands, like stairs and hallways that endure much wear and tear, will also be covered under this warranty.

Karastan also donates to Susan G. Komen as well. Through the Decorate for the Cure program, Karastan has donated over $3 million to support the vision of a cancer-free world.

Some shocking numbers are that 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Everyday in the U.S., approximately 113 women AND men die of breast cancer. The newest, BOLDEST goal from the Komen foundation is to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2026. Komen is pursuing this by spending its dollars on hiring research scientists to find the best cures, disseminating information and producing events to educate the public to strive for health equity, and access to timely, high-quality cancer care. We at Barry Carpet are honored to support Mohawk, Karastan, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation in this important movement to fight breast cancer. “Weathered, woodsy, complex, cozy.” These are the words emphasized in Sherwin-Williams’ promotional video for their 2017 “Color of the Year.” What color palette comes to your mind when you hear those words? Certainly not last year’s “Alabaster” white…

This year’s “Color of the Year” is “Poised Taupe SW 6039.” Part earthen brown, part conservative gray, Sherwin-Williams’ comments on its choice as: “both modern and classic, and a beautiful balance of warm and cool.” Essentially, Poised Taupe has been defined as “the new neutral.”

Since traditional neutrals have been monochromatic greys, there has been a recent shift in the design world to more complex taupes and browns, according to Sherwin-Williams. Influences include: “natural or organic materials, weathered and worn finishes and global cultural preferences,” denoting its worldly essence. House Beautiful observed that Poised Taupe, “definitely strikes the balance between bold and subtle.”

Floor Covering Weekly recently noted that the design world is seeing a trend in calmer, more peaceful spaces. Largely due to the fact that our lives are busier now than ever with technology and multi-tasking, people want to come home to a place that is the opposite of what they experience during the work day: Serenity. Colors have a huge impact on our mood — a color like Poised Taupe has the potential to both inspire and pacify.
